Average carry distance by club

Carry is where the ball lands, before it rolls. These are TrackMan’s tour averages from competition and range shots across a season, with the club speed that produced them.

Estimate your distance for every club

Know one club and you can sketch the rest. Enter your 7-iron carry and the chart above is scaled to it, using the club-to-club ratios of the tour whose 7-iron is nearer yours. Long clubs usually fall short of this estimate at slower speeds, which is why hybrids replace long irons.

Average driving distance by handicap and age

A man in his 40s with a 10 to 14.9 handicap averages 228 yards off the tee; at the same handicap he averages 207 yards in his 60s. These are Arccos’s 2023 on-course drives on par 4s and 5s, including roll.

Amateur driver carry by skill and age

Shot Scope’s LM1 launch monitor measures carry rather than total. Its averages strip the best and worst shots, so they read higher than a plain average.

Common questions about club distances

How far does the average golfer hit a 7-iron?

PGA Tour players average 176 yards of carry with a 7-iron and LPGA Tour players 143 yards (TrackMan, 2023 season). Amateurs swing slower: at TrackMan’s average amateur driver speed of 93.4 mph, the tour ratio of 7-iron to driver speed puts the 7-iron at about 75 mph, which carries roughly 135 to 145 yards.

How far does the average amateur hit a driver?

Arccos measured 225 yards for men and 178 yards for women in 2023, on the course and including roll. TrackMan’s average male amateur carries it 204 yards. A 10 to 14.9 handicap man in his 40s averages 228 yards in Arccos’s data.

What is the distance gap between irons?

On the PGA Tour the step from one iron to the next is 9 to 12 yards of carry (7-iron 176, 8-iron 164, 9-iron 152); on the LPGA Tour it is 9 to 12 yards. Wider or uneven steps in your own bag are what the bag gapping calculator finds.

How do I find my real carry distances?

Take the typical carry of several good strikes per club on a launch monitor, or your on-course shots over a few rounds, not your best one. Then put them in the bag gapping calculator to see the gaps, and check lofts against the golf club loft chart if two clubs fly the same distance.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure is read from the publisher’s own page or release on 29 October 2026. Tour carries are TrackMan’s 2023 season averages (men: 40+ events and 200+ players; women: 30+ events and 150+ players). Arccos figures are read from the charts in its 2023 driver distance report. Carry and total are never mixed in one table. The 7-iron estimate in the FAQ uses the tour ratio of 7-iron to driver club speed (0.80) and 1.83 to 1.91 yards of carry per mph.
