Swing speed chart: driver distance by club speed

At 90 mph a driver carries about 196 to 221 yards; at 100 mph about 218 to 245; at 110 mph about 240 to 270. The low figure is the average amateur strike, the high one tour-level launch and spin.

What is a good driver swing speed?

The average male golfer swings a driver at about 94 mph and the PGA Tour average is 115 mph. TrackMan’s Combine averages by handicap show how little speed separates a 10 handicap from a bogey golfer: 3 mph. Strike and launch account for much of the rest.

How do I get more distance at the same swing speed?

Hit the centre of the face and launch it higher with less spin. TrackMan’s optimizer at 93 mph shows carry rising from 214 yards with a 1.5° downward attack angle to 232 yards at 7.5° upward, with no extra speed. Centred strikes raise smash factor towards the 1.49 tour average; at 1.40 a 95 mph swing makes about 133 mph of ball speed, at 1.49 about 142.

A shaft that suits your speed and tempo helps you find the centre more often; the shaft flex calculator uses the same speed bands as the chart above. Once you know your carries, the golf club distance chart shows how they compare club by club.

Common questions about swing speed

How far should I hit my driver for my swing speed?

Roughly 2.2 to 2.45 yards of carry for every mph of driver club speed. At 100 mph that is about 218 to 245 yards of carry. The PGA Tour average is 115 mph and 282 yards of carry; the LPGA Tour average is 96 mph and 223 yards (TrackMan, 2023 season).

What is the average driver swing speed?

TrackMan’s Combine data puts the average male golfer (14.5 handicap) at 94 mph and a 10-handicap woman at 83 mph. PGA Tour players average 115 mph and LPGA Tour players 96 mph.

What is a good smash factor with a driver?

TrackMan’s target is close to 1.50, and the tour average is 1.49. TrackMan’s average male golfer is at 1.44, and Shot Scope’s launch monitor users average 1.40, so better contact alone is worth several mph of ball speed.

How the estimate is made

Carry is club speed times 2.18 to 2.45 yards per mph. Those are our own divisions of TrackMan’s published numbers: 204 yards at 93.4 mph for the average male amateur (2.18), 223 yards at 96 mph for the LPGA Tour (2.32, the middle estimate) and 282 yards at 115 mph for the PGA Tour (2.45). Ball speed uses smash factors from 1.40 (Shot Scope’s launch monitor users) to 1.49 (tour average). Total adds 8%, the gap between Shot Scope’s average carry (228 yd) and total (247.1 yd). The 7-iron uses the tour ratio of 7-iron to driver speed (0.80) and 1.83 to 1.91 yards of carry per mph.
